Nat Rand

What company were you an intern at and how did you find out about it?

Surface Impression: Luke from Wired Sussex made me aware of BIP and I followed this up by researching it online. I read up on Surface Impression after seeing that they were involved with BIP.

What were the reasons you went for an internship?

I was/am looking for a career change after leaving my job as a Probation Service Officer. It seemed like a good way to find out what working in the industry is actually like and it complimented a part time digital design course I have been doing.

What were your duties and what experience did you take away with you?

Using in-house CMS to update existing websites/during the production of new ones.
Producing leaflets for print for clients using InDesign.
Creating designs ideas for new sites.
Assisting with the build of new sites.
Researching/ market analysis.
Copy editing/proof reading documents/sites.
Liaising with clients regarding project progress.
Attended client meetings.
Designed interactives using Flash.

What did the internship lead on to afterwards?

I am currently employed part-time as a Freelancer at Surface Impression and hope to continue to do so when my course finishes in March.

Working at Surface impression has given me a brilliant insight into how design projects are run. I’ve also built upon skills learned during my course, plus used additional programmes.

Would you recommend an internship to others?

Absolutely, yes! It’s been a brilliant experience personally and I’m sure one that will continue to be of benefit to me when looking for jobs in the future. I’m most grateful to the BIP team and Peter at Surface Impression.
